About WordLoci

Who Made This

WordLoci was created by Mark, an English lecturer in English for Academic Purposes based in Japan. A keen language learner who started learning languages quite late in life, Mark found that spaced repetition systems were a great way to retain vocabulary. He holds an MA in English Teaching and is trilingual in English, Japanese, and Chinese.

Why WordLoci Exists

After learning Japanese and Chinese, Mark found that most language sites lacked audio and depth per entry. WordLoci was built to fix that. Every entry has a definition, examples, extended meaning, usage notes, regional variation, and professional audio.

The Memory Palace

WordLoci integrates the Method of Loci, an ancient memory technique that uses spatial memory cues, into a modern language learning app. By associating vocabulary with vivid locations in a mental palace, learners achieve stronger long-term retention.

What WordLoci Covers

The site offers over 11,000 entries across 8 content types including slang, idioms, phrasal verbs, grammar, vocabulary, and collocations. Features include spaced repetition, quizzes, and audio in multiple accents (British, American, and Australian).

Acknowledgments

The vocabulary content in WordLoci includes the New General Service List (NGSL), created by Dr. Charles Browne, Dr. Brent Culligan, and Joseph Phillips. The NGSL is a research-based list of the most important high-frequency English vocabulary words for second language learners. Learn more at newgeneralservicelist.com.
